Frequently asked questions
What are IATA codes used for?
IATA codes are three-letter identifiers assigned by the International Air Transport Association to airports, such as JFK for New York or LHR for London Heathrow. In air cargo they appear on air waybills and booking systems to specify the origin and destination airports unambiguously.
What is the difference between IATA and ICAO airport codes?
IATA codes are three letters used commercially on tickets, air waybills and booking systems (for example LHR). ICAO codes are four letters used operationally by air traffic control and flight planning (for example EGLL for the same airport). Air cargo tracking generally uses the IATA code.
How do I find an airport by country?
Use the country search box above and start typing a country name or its two-letter ISO code. The map and the list update instantly to show every airport on record for that country, each with its IATA code and UN/LOCODE.
Which are the busiest air cargo airports in the world?
Measured by cargo tonnage, Hong Kong International (HKG) is consistently among the world's busiest air cargo airports, alongside Memphis (MEM), Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and Anchorage (ANC). You can look up these and thousands of other airports on the interactive map above.
Is the airports directory free?
Yes. Browsing every airport, viewing them on the interactive map, and looking up IATA codes is completely free and requires no sign-up.
