Why empty container space is so expensive
Ocean freight is priced by the container, not by the cubic metre you actually use. Whether a 40ft box leaves 70% full or 95% full, the freight rate, terminal handling and most surcharges are identical. So every cubic metre of air you ship is money spent moving nothing. Industry estimates put average container utilisation at roughly 70-80%, which means one in every four or five containers on the water is carrying empty space.
The problem compounds. Under-filled containers mean you book more containers to move the same goods, and that multiplies freight spend, terminal fees and drayage, plus the demurrage and detention risk that comes with every extra unit you have to collect and hand back.

Say you ship 100 forty-foot containers a year on a lane where all-in costs run about $2,800 per box. At 78% average utilisation, a meaningful share of that space is air. Tighten the average to 92% (entirely achievable by planning the load before you stuff it) and you need roughly 85 containers to move the same cargo.

How to get more out of every container
The calculator handles the hard part, but a few habits make a real difference:
- Plan the load before you book, not at the dock. The booking decision (one box or two, standard or high cube) is where most of the saving is.
- Mix carton sizes deliberately so smaller items fill the gaps around larger ones.
- Load heavy, dense cargo low and centred to use the weight allowance without wasting height.
- For light, bulky goods, reach for a high cube. That extra foot of height is usually cheaper per cubic metre than booking a second container.
