Shortest ocean path, not a straight line

We route around coastlines and through the canals and straits ships actually use (Suez, Panama, Gibraltar, Malacca), so the distance is what a vessel really sails, not a line drawn across land.

Distance, time and route in one view

Get the total in kilometres and nautical miles, an at-sea transit estimate, and the full path drawn on an interactive map, for a single lane or a multi-stop voyage.

What it means for your business

A fast, accurate distance is the number behind quotes, budgets and delivery promises.

Quote lanes in secondsGive customers a distance and transit time for any port pair instantly, without waiting on a carrier.
Budget fuel and freightDistance in nautical miles drives bunker and freight math, get it right before you commit.
Weigh routing trade-offsCompare the shortest path against a Red Sea / Suez-avoiding route and see the cost in days.
Set ETAs you can defendBase delivery promises on the real sailing distance, not a straight-line guess.
Sanity-check carrier quotesSpot an inflated transit time or a padded distance before you sign off on a booking.
Plan multi-stop movesChain stops for a milk-run or a transshipment and see the total distance and time.

Distance & time FAQ

How is the sea distance between two ports calculated?

Panvaya routes the shortest navigable ocean path between the two ports, following coastlines and passing through the real canals and straits ships use (Suez, Panama, Gibraltar, Malacca and others) rather than drawing a straight line across land. The result is the sailing distance a vessel would actually cover, in both kilometres and nautical miles.

How is transit time estimated?

Transit time is the routed distance divided by a typical container-vessel service speed, so it reflects time at sea on the shortest ocean path. It is an estimate for planning: real voyages also include port calls, waiting and transshipment dwell, which vary by carrier and service. For carrier-published schedules with dates and cut-offs, use Panvaya's sailing schedule search.

Can I add stops or a multi-leg route?

Yes. Add intermediate stops and the tool routes each leg over the ocean and sums the total distance and time. The headline distance, transit time and map are free for everyone; the detailed leg-by-leg breakdown is available once you sign in, free with a Panvaya account.

What does 'avoid dangerous area' do?

Turning on the safe-route option reroutes the voyage around the Red Sea, Bab-el-Mandeb, Gulf of Aden and the Suez Canal, so a Europe-to-Asia lane is calculated around the Cape of Good Hope instead. It shows the added distance and time that current Red Sea diversions cost.

Is the distance and time calculator free?

Yes. Calculating the sea distance, transit time and route between any two seaports is free and needs no sign-up. Creating a free Panvaya account additionally unlocks the leg-by-leg breakdown, container and air-cargo tracking, sailing schedules and the rest of the toolset.
