About Hapag-Lloyd
Hapag-Lloyd AG traces its shipping roots to 1847, when the Hamburg-American Line (HAPAG) was founded, but the company in its current form dates to 1970, when HAPAG merged with Norddeutscher Lloyd. It remains headquartered in Hamburg and today ranks as the fifth-largest container line in the world by capacity, running services that reach more than 600 ports across roughly 130 to 140 countries.
The fleet numbers somewhere around 300 to 325 owned and chartered container vessels with a combined capacity in the range of 2.4 to 2.5 million TEU. In February 2025 Hapag-Lloyd left THE Alliance and launched the Gemini Cooperation with Maersk, a hub-and-spoke network of roughly 340 ships that leans on a smaller set of main-line ports and dedicated feeders to improve schedule reliability. The carrier is strong on the east-west trades between Asia, Europe and the Americas, and holds a particularly deep footprint in Latin America.
In February 2026 Hapag-Lloyd agreed to acquire Israeli carrier ZIM for about 4.2 billion dollars, a deal approved by ZIM shareholders and expected to close by late 2026, subject to regulatory sign-off. The company has also pushed hard on decarbonization, ordering dual-fuel newbuildings capable of running on liquefied gas and methanol as it works toward a lower-emission fleet.
Hapag-Lloyd container tracking FAQ
Where is Hapag-Lloyd headquartered and when was it founded?
Hapag-Lloyd is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. Its earliest predecessor, the Hamburg-American Line (HAPAG), was founded in 1847, and the modern Hapag-Lloyd AG was created in 1970 through the merger of HAPAG and Norddeutscher Lloyd.
What shipping alliance does Hapag-Lloyd belong to?
Hapag-Lloyd is part of the Gemini Cooperation, an operational partnership with Maersk that launched in February 2025. It previously belonged to THE Alliance, which it left to form Gemini.
What does the SCAC code HLCU identify?
HLCU is the Standard Carrier Alpha Code assigned to Hapag-Lloyd. It appears on bills of lading and booking documents and is used to identify Hapag-Lloyd as the ocean carrier in shipping and customs records.
How do I track a Hapag-Lloyd shipment?
Enter your Hapag-Lloyd container number, Bill of Lading (BOL), or booking number into Panvaya's tracker. You'll get the live vessel route, milestone events, and a predictive ETA in real time, with no Hapag-Lloyd account or login needed for a quick lookup.
What is Hapag-Lloyd's SCAC code?
Hapag-Lloyd's SCAC code is HLCU. It identifies Hapag-Lloyd on bills of lading and shipping documents. On Panvaya you don't need to enter it. Just paste your container, BOL, or booking number and we detect the carrier automatically.
Can I track Hapag-Lloyd containers by Bill of Lading or booking number?
Yes. Panvaya supports Hapag-Lloyd tracking by container number, Bill of Lading (BOL), and booking reference (BK). Any of the three returns the same real-time route, port calls, and ETA.
Is Hapag-Lloyd container tracking free on Panvaya?
Yes, you can track Hapag-Lloyd shipments for free, with no login for a quick lookup. Sign in to unlock the full journey: detailed milestones, predictive ETAs, transhipment legs, and exception alerts.
Why isn't my Hapag-Lloyd container updating?
Hapag-Lloyd tracking reflects what the carrier and vessel feeds have reported, so there is often a lag between a real-world move and the update. Panvaya refreshes on a regular cycle; a shipment that looks stuck usually just means the next milestone (such as vessel departure or discharge) hasn't been filed yet.
How accurate is the ETA for Hapag-Lloyd shipments?
Panvaya combines Hapag-Lloyd's schedule with live vessel position and historical performance to predict arrival, and refines the ETA as the journey progresses and conditions change. It is a continuously updated estimate, not a guarantee.
