About Westwood Shipping Lines
Westwood Shipping Lines grew out of the Weyerhaeuser Steamship Company, which the Washington timber giant set up in the 1920s to move lumber along the coast. As Weyerhaeuser pushed into Asian markets through the 1970s and 1980s, the shipping arm took the Westwood name and reoriented around containerized and breakbulk trade across the Pacific. Ownership changed hands twice in the modern era. Weyerhaeuser sold the line to J-WeSco, a subsidiary of Japan's Sumitomo Warehouse, in 2011 for about 53 million dollars. Sumitomo later divested to focus on its core logistics business, and Singapore-based Swire Shipping completed its acquisition of Westwood in 2022.
On February 1, 2024, the Westwood brand was folded into Swire Shipping, ending the standalone identity while keeping the transpacific route alive as the Westwood service within Swire's larger network.
