American once flew its own freighters, operating McDonnell Douglas MD-11s from 1991, but it grew dissatisfied with the type and agreed to sell all 19 airframes to FedEx, completing the exit and retiring dedicated freighter service by 2001. Since then the carrier has been a belly-only operator. Its widebody fleet, including Boeing 777-200ERs, 777-300ERs, 787-8s and 787-9s, provides the bulk of long-haul cargo lift, while narrowbody aircraft carry mail, express and general freight across the dense United States domestic network.
The division's strongest cargo region is Latin America, anchored at the Miami (MIA) hub, with frequent widebody service to Brazil, Argentina and beyond, complemented by transatlantic lanes to Europe and transpacific reach to Asia and Oceania.
