Why Is My Container Shipment Delayed? 7 Causes

It's tempting to treat every delay the same way (wait it out and hope), but a 3-day slip from port congestion and a 12-day slip from a rerouted vessel are completely different problems. Every importer eventually hits the same wall: the ETA has passed, the tracking page hasn't moved in days, and the only update from the carrier is a new date with no explanation attached. There are at least seven distinct reasons this happens, and they call for very different responses. Some clear up on their own within days. Others are now a permanent feature of certain trade lanes and need to be planned around rather than waited out.

1. The vessel skipped your port on purpose

Carriers plan sailing schedules months in advance, but when a service falls behind (bad weather earlier in the rotation, a mechanical issue, a missed slot at a busy terminal) the fastest way to recover is to cancel a port call entirely. This is called a blank sailing or port omission, and it's a deliberate scheduling decision, not an accident. Your container simply waits for the next vessel on that string, which can add a full week or more depending on how often the service calls at your port.

The tell: compare the vessel's actual port rotation against the one on your original booking confirmation. If a port that was on the original schedule quietly disappears, that's a blank sailing, not a problem on your end.

2. The ship is anchored, waiting for a berth

Port congestion doesn't always look like a chaotic yard full of containers. Increasingly it looks like a vessel sitting at anchor just outside the port, sometimes for days, waiting for a berth to open up. In your tracking data this shows up as a gap between vessel arrival (the ship reaches the port area) and discharge (it actually docks and unloads). If that gap runs past a day or two, the vessel is queued, not moving cargo.

3. The connecting vessel left without it

On routes that pass through a transhipment hub (common for smaller regional ports feeding into a handful of major hubs), your container is unloaded from one vessel and has to catch a second one to finish the journey. If the first vessel arrives late, or the hub terminal is backed up, the container can miss its connection and sit at the hub waiting for the next sailing, sometimes a week or more later.

The tell: status frozen at an intermediate port that isn't your final destination, for noticeably longer than the transhipment window quoted at booking.

4. It's off the ship, but customs hasn't released it

This one trips up a lot of first-time importers because it looks identical to a carrier delay from the outside: the tracking page just stops updating. But if the discharged milestone already fired, the carrier's job is largely done. A hold at this stage (missing documentation, a random inspection, an unpaid duty, an incomplete entry) sits between you, your broker and the customs authority, not the shipping line. Calling the carrier won't fix it. Calling your broker might.

5. There's nowhere to put the box once it's off the ship

Equipment and chassis shortages are a quieter cause of delay. The container is discharged on schedule, but there's no available chassis to move it by road, or no rail slot to move it inland, so it sits in the yard racking up free-time days before anyone even touches it. This is especially common right after several vessels arrive close together and overwhelm local trucking capacity.

The tell: discharge happens on time, but gate-out lags by several days with no customs or documentation issue on your end.

6. Weather closed the door for a few days

Typhoon season across East and Southeast Asia, and winter storm systems on the North Atlantic and US East Coast, regularly force ports to pause operations or vessels to slow down and ride out rough seas. These delays tend to be sharp and short: a sudden multi-day jump in ETA that lines up with a named storm, followed by the schedule mostly catching back up over the following weeks.

7. The route itself changed

The last one is the newest, and for a lot of trade lanes it's now the most structural: entire shipping routes have been redrawn. Most container lines still send Asia-Europe and Asia-US East Coast services around the Cape of Good Hope instead of through the Suez Canal, avoiding the Red Sea after repeated attacks on commercial vessels since late 2023. You don't need inside information to diagnose most of these. The tracking data you already have usually contains the answer:

  • Compare the vessel's port call history against the rotation printed on your original booking. A missing port call means a blank sailing, not a mystery.
  • Check whether other shipments on the same vessel or trade lane are also running late. If everyone on your route is delayed by a similar number of days, the cause is systemic (congestion, weather, a reroute), not specific to your booking.
  • Note exactly which milestone the delay shows up at. A stall before discharged is a carrier or port problem. A stall after discharge but before gate out is almost always customs, equipment, or trucking, not the ship.
  • Watch how long the delay has run. A few days usually resolves itself. Anything measured in weeks, especially on a lane already known for reroutes, calls for a new plan rather than more patience.

What to actually do about each one

  • Blank sailing or congestion. Push your downstream bookings (trucking, warehouse slots, customs appointments) back to match the new ETA as soon as you see it, rather than waiting for a firm confirmation that may come late.
  • Missed transhipment. Ask your forwarder for the confirmed onward vessel and its new ETA specifically. "In transit" alone won't tell you if a replacement sailing has even been booked.
  • Customs or documentation hold. Contact your customs broker directly and immediately. Every day it sits is a day of demurrage risk, and the carrier cannot resolve this for you.
  • Equipment or chassis shortage. Ask the carrier for an equipment-interchange update, and consider a different empty-return depot if your usual one is backed up.
  • Structural reroute (Red Sea, Panama Canal). Build the extra transit days into your planning permanently for that lane, not just for the current booking. These are running for months, not weeks.
