COSCO
SCAC: COSU
State-owned Chinese carrier ranked among the world's top four, and a founding member of the Ocean Alliance.
COSCO Shipping Lines is the container arm of China COSCO Shipping Corporation, the state-owned group formed in 2016 when China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO, founded 1961) merged with China Shipping Group. The container business itself came together the same year, folding the former COSCON and CSCL fleets into a single operator. That heritage makes it one of the oldest continuously operating names in Chinese shipping, now scaled up to sit alongside Maersk, MSC, and CMA CGM at the top of the industry.

About COSCO
COSCO Shipping Lines is the container arm of China COSCO Shipping Corporation, the state-owned group formed in 2016 when China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO, founded 1961) merged with China Shipping Group. The container business itself came together the same year, folding the former COSCON and CSCL fleets into a single operator. That heritage makes it one of the oldest continuously operating names in Chinese shipping, now scaled up to sit alongside Maersk, MSC, and CMA CGM at the top of the industry.
The line runs one of the largest fleets afloat, with roughly 500 owned and chartered container vessels and self-operated capacity above 3.4 million TEU, good for around the fourth-largest position worldwide and close to a tenth of global slot capacity. Its network covers more than 350 ports across roughly 100 countries, with particular density on the Asia-Europe, Transpacific, and intra-Asia trades where its Chinese port base gives it an edge.
COSCO is a founding member of the Ocean Alliance, which it operates with CMA CGM, Evergreen, and OOCL under the multi-year DAY product series. OOCL is a corporate sibling: its Hong Kong parent, Orient Overseas International, was acquired by the COSCO group in 2018, though OOCL keeps its own brand and booking systems. Beyond liner shipping, the wider group holds major stakes in container terminals worldwide through COSCO Shipping Ports.
COSCO container tracking FAQ
Where is COSCO Shipping Lines headquartered?
COSCO Shipping Lines is based in Shanghai, China. It is the container liner subsidiary of the state-owned China COSCO Shipping Corporation, which also has its head office in Shanghai.
Which alliance does COSCO belong to?
COSCO is a founding member of the Ocean Alliance, which it operates together with CMA CGM, Evergreen, and OOCL. The alliance runs a shared set of east-west services under its multi-year DAY product series.
Is OOCL part of COSCO?
Yes. The COSCO group acquired OOCL's Hong Kong parent, Orient Overseas International, in 2018. OOCL is a sister brand within the same corporate group but continues to operate under its own name and booking systems.
How do I check COSCO tracking availability on Panvaya?
Enter a COSCO container number in the tracker on this page. If the carrier integration is available, Panvaya returns the shipment milestones and route. If it is still being onboarded, you can send a carrier request and ask to be notified when support becomes available.
What is COSCO's SCAC code?
COSCO's SCAC code is COSU. It identifies COSCO on bills of lading and shipping documents and helps Panvaya match a reference to the correct carrier integration.
Can I track COSCO containers by Bill of Lading or booking number?
Bill of Lading and booking tracking is available after sign-in when Panvaya supports that reference type for COSCO. Carrier capabilities vary, so Panvaya shows a clear availability message instead of returning incomplete tracking data.
Is COSCO container tracking free on Panvaya?
A guest can check one container without signing in when COSCO tracking is supported. A Panvaya account is required for saved journeys, Bill of Lading or booking tracking, exception alerts, and additional shipments.
Why isn't my COSCO container updating?
Carrier milestones can appear after the physical movement occurs. If COSCO is supported and the container is valid, a quiet timeline may mean the next event has not yet been published. If the carrier is not yet available, Panvaya will show an onboarding message and a carrier-request option.
How accurate is the ETA for COSCO shipments?
When COSCO tracking is supported and enough journey data is available, Panvaya updates the displayed arrival estimate as new milestones and vessel information arrive. Any ETA remains an estimate rather than a delivery guarantee.
