COSCO

SCAC: COSU

State-owned Chinese carrier ranked among the world's top four, and a founding member of the Ocean Alliance.

COSCO Shipping Lines is the container arm of China COSCO Shipping Corporation, the state-owned group formed in 2016 when China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO, founded 1961) merged with China Shipping Group. The container business itself came together the same year, folding the former COSCON and CSCL fleets into a single operator. That heritage makes it one of the oldest continuously operating names in Chinese shipping, now scaled up to sit alongside Maersk, MSC, and CMA CGM at the top of the industry.

About COSCO

COSCO Shipping Lines is the container arm of China COSCO Shipping Corporation, the state-owned group formed in 2016 when China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO, founded 1961) merged with China Shipping Group. The container business itself came together the same year, folding the former COSCON and CSCL fleets into a single operator. That heritage makes it one of the oldest continuously operating names in Chinese shipping, now scaled up to sit alongside Maersk, MSC, and CMA CGM at the top of the industry.

The line runs one of the largest fleets afloat, with roughly 500 owned and chartered container vessels and self-operated capacity above 3.4 million TEU, good for around the fourth-largest position worldwide and close to a tenth of global slot capacity. Its network covers more than 350 ports across roughly 100 countries, with particular density on the Asia-Europe, Transpacific, and intra-Asia trades where its Chinese port base gives it an edge.

COSCO is a founding member of the Ocean Alliance, which it operates with CMA CGM, Evergreen, and OOCL under the multi-year DAY product series. OOCL is a corporate sibling: its Hong Kong parent, Orient Overseas International, was acquired by the COSCO group in 2018, though OOCL keeps its own brand and booking systems. Beyond liner shipping, the wider group holds major stakes in container terminals worldwide through COSCO Shipping Ports.

COSCO container tracking FAQ

Where is COSCO Shipping Lines headquartered?

COSCO Shipping Lines is based in Shanghai, China. It is the container liner subsidiary of the state-owned China COSCO Shipping Corporation, which also has its head office in Shanghai.

Which alliance does COSCO belong to?

COSCO is a founding member of the Ocean Alliance, which it operates together with CMA CGM, Evergreen, and OOCL. The alliance runs a shared set of east-west services under its multi-year DAY product series.

Is OOCL part of COSCO?

Yes. The COSCO group acquired OOCL's Hong Kong parent, Orient Overseas International, in 2018. OOCL is a sister brand within the same corporate group but continues to operate under its own name and booking systems.

How do I track a COSCO shipment?

Enter your COSCO container number, Bill of Lading (BOL), or booking number into Panvaya's tracker. You'll get the live vessel route, milestone events, and a predictive ETA in real time, with no COSCO account or login needed for a quick lookup.

What is COSCO's SCAC code?

COSCO's SCAC code is COSU. It identifies COSCO on bills of lading and shipping documents. On Panvaya you don't need to enter it. Just paste your container, BOL, or booking number and we detect the carrier automatically.

Can I track COSCO containers by Bill of Lading or booking number?

Yes. Panvaya supports COSCO tracking by container number, Bill of Lading (BOL), and booking reference (BK). Any of the three returns the same real-time route, port calls, and ETA.

Is COSCO container tracking free on Panvaya?

Yes, you can track COSCO shipments for free, with no login for a quick lookup. Sign in to unlock the full journey: detailed milestones, predictive ETAs, transhipment legs, and exception alerts.

Why isn't my COSCO container updating?

COSCO tracking reflects what the carrier and vessel feeds have reported, so there is often a lag between a real-world move and the update. Panvaya refreshes on a regular cycle; a shipment that looks stuck usually just means the next milestone (such as vessel departure or discharge) hasn't been filed yet.

How accurate is the ETA for COSCO shipments?

Panvaya combines COSCO's schedule with live vessel position and historical performance to predict arrival, and refines the ETA as the journey progresses and conditions change. It is a continuously updated estimate, not a guarantee.
