The current enterprise was formed in 2016 by merging four state bodies: the shipping line, the Maritime and Transit Services Enterprise, the Dry Port Enterprise, and Comet Transport Services. That consolidation turned ESLSE into more than a shipowner. It handles freight forwarding, stevedoring, port and terminal work, dry ports at Modjo and Kality, and inland multimodal transport, plus a maritime training institute at Bishoftu.
The fleet is modest, roughly ten Ethiopian-flagged ships built around multipurpose and general cargo vessels with one Ultramax bulk carrier, the MV Abay II. Sailings concentrate on the Red Sea, Mediterranean, Far East, the Gulf states, and the Indian subcontinent, feeding Ethiopia's import and export flows almost entirely through the Port of Djibouti, with Berbera in Somaliland as a secondary gateway.
