About TOTE Maritime

TOTE Maritime is an American domestic ocean carrier and part of Saltchuk, the family-owned Seattle-based group that also owns TOTE's sister transportation companies. Its lineage runs back to 1975, when Totem Ocean Trailer Express began serving Alaska. Today the business runs as two divisions: TOTE Maritime Alaska, sailing between Tacoma, Washington and Anchorage, and TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico, running weekly between Jacksonville, Florida and San Juan.

Because it moves cargo between U.S. ports, TOTE operates under the Jones Act, so its ships are U.S.-built, U.S.-flagged, and crewed by American mariners. That domestic focus makes it a lifeline carrier rather than a global container line, handling groceries, vehicles, construction materials, and military rolling stock for two markets that depend heavily on sea freight.

TOTE is best known for a first in the industry. In 2015 it christened Isla Bella and Perla del Caribe, the first oceangoing container ships built to run on liquefied natural gas, which now serve the Puerto Rico trade. On the Alaska side, TOTE completed LNG conversions of both Orca-class roll-on/roll-off vessels, Midnight Sun and North Star, in 2023, an engine retrofit it described as the first of its scale in North America.
