Virgin Atlantic Air Cargo Profile

Virgin Atlantic was founded in 1984 and is headquartered in Crawley, West Sussex, close to London Gatwick. The airline is 51 percent owned by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group and 49 percent by Delta Air Lines, and it joined the SkyTeam alliance in March 2023. Its cargo division, Virgin Atlantic Cargo, sells lower-deck capacity on the carrier's scheduled long-haul passenger network rather than operating standalone freighters. That makes it a belly-cargo specialist focused on premium intercontinental lanes out of the United Kingdom rather than a dedicated all-cargo operator.

The fleet is entirely widebody and twin-engine, built around the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, the Airbus A350-1000, and the Airbus A330 family including the newer A330-900neo. Virgin Atlantic holds no dedicated freighters, so cargo uplift is tied to passenger schedules and lower-deck volume. During the COVID-19 period the airline ran cargo-only flights on passenger aircraft, and it has since operated seasonal cargo-only rotations such as London Heathrow to Brussels using A330-300 and A350-1000 aircraft, moving perishables and pharmaceuticals with up to roughly 50 tonnes of capacity per flight.

Virgin Atlantic Cargo is anchored at London Heathrow, with Manchester as a secondary UK gateway, and states that it reaches more than 350 destinations worldwide through direct flights, interline agreements, onforwarding partners, and trucking. Its reach is extended by cargo joint ventures with Delta Cargo and Air France-KLM Cargo, which pool transatlantic and wider capacity. Core lanes run across the North Atlantic to the United States and Caribbean, from the UK to India, to Africa, and to East Asia, with the carrier handling perishables, pharmaceuticals, e-commerce, and general freight in the bellies of its passenger widebodies.
