About Maritime Marfret
Marfret traces its roots to 1951, when Claude Vidil and Pierre Giraud launched Marseille-Fret and chartered an Icelandic schooner named the Douce France. The line took its current Marfret name in 1987, the same year it opened a Mediterranean route to Venezuela, Colombia, and the Caribbean islands. It remains one of the few independent French shipowners still operating under its own flag.
The company built its identity around trades that larger carriers often overlook: France and Northern Europe to the French Antilles (Guadeloupe, Martinique), French Guiana, the wider Caribbean, and West Africa. Marfret runs an integrated model covering ships, agencies, and handling, and has long carried reefer and project cargo alongside standard containers. It also operates intra-Caribbean feeder tonnage and, from 2005, moved into inland barge transport through its FluvioFeeder venture on the Rhone.
Marfret works closely with Marseille neighbor CMA CGM under vessel-sharing and slot-charter arrangements, so many of its boxes move on shared strings. The owned and chartered fleet is small, on the order of six to eight vessels, with a mix of container, Ro-Ro, and general-cargo ships rather than large box carriers. In 2025 it added the roughly 1,900 TEU Durande for its West Africa service, keeping its focus on niche, well-served regional lanes.
