SpiceJet Air Cargo Profile

SpiceJet is a low-cost carrier based in Gurugram, Haryana, India, operating under IATA code SG and ICAO code SEJ with the callsign SPICEJET. The airline traces its origins to ModiLuft, founded in 1994, and was relaunched as SpiceJet in 2004 under entrepreneur Ajay Singh, flying its first service in May 2005. It is an independent, publicly listed company (NSE: SPICEJET) controlled by Ajay Singh, with no corporate group parent. As a low-cost carrier it belongs to no global passenger or cargo alliance, and its main operating bases are Delhi and Hyderabad.

SpiceJet's cargo operations are branded SpiceXpress, launched in September 2018 as the airline's dedicated air-cargo division. SpiceJet became the first South Asian operator to induct a converted Boeing 737 freighter, and during the 2020 to 2022 period SpiceXpress rapidly added leased widebodies including the Airbus A340, Airbus A330, Boeing 767 and Boeing 777 for long-haul lanes. In March and April 2024 the cargo unit was demerged into a separate company, SpiceXpress and Logistics Limited, in which SpiceJet retained roughly a 98 percent stake, with the remainder held by an employee welfare trust.

The current dedicated fleet is modest, centred on about three Boeing 737-700BDSF converted narrowbody freighters, after most leased widebodies were returned or grounded amid the parent airline's financial and legal difficulties. Cargo also moves in the belly holds of the passenger 737-800, 737-900ER, 737 MAX 8 and regional Dash 8-400 fleet, extended by a 2024 belly-capacity partnership with Star Air across smaller Indian cities. SpiceXpress handles cold-chain and pharmaceutical shipments (under its Spice Pharma Pro product), perishables, high-value goods, fragile and odd-dimension cargo, and dangerous goods, serving domestic India and nearby Middle East and Asian markets.
