Swire Shipping

SCAC: CHVW

Singapore-based multipurpose line, founded 1872 as China Navigation, specialising in Pacific and Australasian trades.

Swire Shipping traces its roots to 1872, when John Samuel Swire founded The China Navigation Company (CNCo) to run paddle steamers on the Yangtze River. That business grew into a globe-spanning liner operator, and in October 2021 the Singapore-based operating company was rebranded as Swire Shipping. The historic CNCo name survives as the UK holding company. Today the line sits within the wider Swire Group, controlled by the privately held John Swire & Sons.

About Swire Shipping

Swire Shipping traces its roots to 1872, when John Samuel Swire founded The China Navigation Company (CNCo) to run paddle steamers on the Yangtze River. That business grew into a globe-spanning liner operator, and in October 2021 the Singapore-based operating company was rebranded as Swire Shipping. The historic CNCo name survives as the UK holding company. Today the line sits within the wider Swire Group, controlled by the privately held John Swire & Sons.

Rather than chasing the mega container trades, Swire Shipping built its reputation on multipurpose vessels that carry containers, breakbulk, project cargo, and heavy lift on the same voyage. That capability makes it a lifeline for the Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea, and remote Australasian ports where standard box carriers rarely call. The company runs roughly a dozen liner services reaching more than 400 ports.

Fleet renewal has been a constant theme. Between 2013 and 2015 Swire took delivery of eight 2,118 TEU 'S Class' ships and four smaller 'Chief Class' vessels. A further series of eight 2,400 TEU multipurpose newbuilds, purpose-designed for Pacific Island trades with 45-tonne cranes capable of 90-tonne tandem lifts, began entering service around 2025. The line also operates a separate dry bulk arm, Swire Bulk.

Swire Shipping container tracking FAQ

Where is Swire Shipping headquartered and who owns it?

Swire Shipping Pte Ltd is headquartered in Singapore. It is part of the Swire Group, ultimately controlled by the privately held John Swire & Sons. The London-based holding company retains the historic name The China Navigation Company.

Was Swire Shipping previously called something else?

Yes. The company operated as The China Navigation Company (CNCo) from its founding in 1872 until October 2021, when the Singapore operating company was rebranded as Swire Shipping to unify its customer-facing brands.

What does Swire Shipping specialise in and where does it sail?

It is a multipurpose operator carrying containers, breakbulk, project and heavy-lift cargo on the same vessels. Its network centres on Asia-Pacific, Australasia, and the Pacific Islands, including remote ports in Papua New Guinea and Micronesia that standard container lines rarely serve.

How do I track a Swire Shipping shipment?

Enter your Swire Shipping container number, Bill of Lading (BOL), or booking number into Panvaya's tracker. You'll get the live vessel route, milestone events, and a predictive ETA in real time, with no Swire Shipping account or login needed for a quick lookup.

What is Swire Shipping's SCAC code?

Swire Shipping's SCAC code is CHVW. It identifies Swire Shipping on bills of lading and shipping documents. On Panvaya you don't need to enter it. Just paste your container, BOL, or booking number and we detect the carrier automatically.

Can I track Swire Shipping containers by Bill of Lading or booking number?

Yes. Panvaya supports Swire Shipping tracking by container number, Bill of Lading (BOL), and booking reference (BK). Any of the three returns the same real-time route, port calls, and ETA.

Is Swire Shipping container tracking free on Panvaya?

Yes, you can track Swire Shipping shipments for free, with no login for a quick lookup. Sign in to unlock the full journey: detailed milestones, predictive ETAs, transhipment legs, and exception alerts.

Why isn't my Swire Shipping container updating?

Swire Shipping tracking reflects what the carrier and vessel feeds have reported, so there is often a lag between a real-world move and the update. Panvaya refreshes on a regular cycle; a shipment that looks stuck usually just means the next milestone (such as vessel departure or discharge) hasn't been filed yet.

How accurate is the ETA for Swire Shipping shipments?

Panvaya combines Swire Shipping's schedule with live vessel position and historical performance to predict arrival, and refines the ETA as the journey progresses and conditions change. It is a continuously updated estimate, not a guarantee.
