About SM Line (SML)
SM Line Corporation was incorporated in December 2016 by South Korea's SM Group (Samra Midas Group), a conglomerate with roots in construction. Its founding moment was the collapse of Hanjin Shipping, once Korea's flagship container line. SM Group bought several of Hanjin's terminal operations, including the Gwangyang and Seoul-Incheon facilities, and stood up a new liner carrier that began sailing services through 2017.
The company runs a fleet of roughly two dozen owned and chartered container ships with total capacity above 150,000 TEU, including a series of 8,000 TEU vessels deployed on its transpacific loops. Its network centers on Asia, with intra-Asia services linking China, Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, plus dedicated lanes to the Russian Far East (the RFX service) and Korea-China express routes. Trans-Pacific sailings connect Korea and East Asia to the US West Coast.
SM Line stayed outside the three main global alliances, operating instead through slot-exchange and cooperation deals. It worked alongside the 2M partners from 2020 and, more recently, arranged reciprocal slot swaps with fellow Korean carrier HMM on transpacific services.
